Dokaben is one of the most popular manga series in Japan. But the baseball comic ended its 46-year history with its final episode on June 28.
The series by Shinji Mizushima first appeared in 1972 in the weekly magazine Shonen Champion. The magazine is published by Akita Shoten.
“I have enjoyed drawing my work every day, surrounded by the characters,” said 79-year-old Mizushima in a statement in the magazine.
The last two volumes of Dokaben comic books will be released in August and September, Akita Shoten said. That will bring the total number of Dokaben volumes to 205.
Dokaben follows catcher Taro Yamada and his teammates on the school baseball team.
On social media, many users said they will miss Dokaben. One user wrote, “I switched to left-hand batting after Yamada.” (Kyodo)
