Non-Muslims often think that the clothes Muslim women wear aren’t exciting and are too restrictive. But a new exhibition in San Francisco shows that modern Muslim fashion can be elegant and playful.
“Contemporary Muslim Fashions” opened on Sept. 22 at the de Young Museum. It shows about 80 ensembles from nearly 60 designers from around the world. The ensembles include high-end fashion and streetwear.
It is the first major museum exhibition of its kind. The idea for the exhibition came in 2016, when people in France wanted to ban “burkinis” — swimsuits worn by some Muslim women at the beach — said Jill D’Alessandro, a curator at the museum. At the time, she saw young women wearing “modest fashion.” The fashion allows them to be chic while following their religion.
“It was the dichotomy we were interested in,” she said.
The exhibition will run until January. (AP)
