Should cough drops be allowed or not? That question stopped the Kumamoto Municipal Assembly for eight hours on Sept. 28.
Assembly member Yuka Ogata was speaking at the podium with a cough drop in her mouth. Assembly members criticized her for doing so, but she refused to apologize.
The assembly passed a disciplinary motion to kick her out of the session. All assembly members voted for the motion except Ogata.
“I have not been well for the past several days and decided to take cough drops so that I would not trouble others with my coughing,” Ogata said. “It’s regrettable that I’ve been forced to leave the room without being given the opportunity to explain myself.”
Assembly members said Ogata was breaking the assembly rules because she didn’t retain the integrity of the assembly.
Last year, the 43-year-old was criticized for bringing her newborn son to the assembly. (Kyodo)
