The American dictionary Merriam-Webster said “justice” is what most people looked up on its online dictionary over the last 12 months. The publisher named “justice” the 2018 word of the year.
Merriam-Webster — which calls itself “America’s most trusted dictionary” — said people searched for the word on its website 74 percent more often than in 2017.
People often looked up the word because of news events, the company said in a statement. One such news event was when U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted in August that the U.S. attorney general should stop the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election. Many critics said the tweet was obstruction of justice.
“Justice” joined Dictionary.com’s “misinformation” and the Oxford English Dictionary’s “toxic” as top words of the year. Other words in Merriam-Webster’s list of top lookups included “nationalism” and “pansexual.” (Reuters)
