A hamburger in Wakayama has a very special ingredient. And many tourists are starting to notice it.
It’s called the “Kumanogyu mikan burger,” and was created at a Wakayama hotel. The burger has wagyu spare ribs and – instead of a tomato – a slice of mikan.
Kumanogyu is a brand of wagyu from the prefecture’s southern Kumano region. Wakayama is Japan’s leader producer of mikans, the mandarin oranges that are eaten throughout the country.
The burger is on the fall-winter menu at Kyukamura Kishu Kada hotel. Hotel chef Makoto Nishida said he makes the burger with a mikan, marinated beef spare ribs and a special house sauce. The sauce is made with mandarin juice.
Most tourists take a photo of the burger, the hotel said.
The Kumanogyu mikan burger is being served at cafe Kaze no Uta in the hotel through February. It is 500 alone, or 800 as a set meal that includes a drink. (Kyodo)
