Japanese cartoonist Rumiko Takahashi has won a lifetime achievement award at one of the world’s top comics festivals.

The 61-year-old Niigata Prefecture native won the Grand Prize for her work in manga, said the organizer of the Angouleme International Comics Festival in the city in southern France on Jan. 23.

Takahashi is best-known for her comedy mangas, including Urusei Yatsura, or Lum in the English edition, and Mezon Ikkoku (Maison Ikkoku). She has produced about 200 volumes over her 40-year career, selling more than 200 million copies worldwide, the organizer said.

“In a society that does not accept differences … Rumiko Takahashi has always focused on highlighting the outsiders and the eccentrics,” the organizer said in a statement, calling her works “extremely progressive.”

The four-day festival wrapped up on Jan. 27. It is the second-largest comics festival in Europe and the third-largest in the world. (Kyodo)
