A thriving modern city of modern architecture. A vast savannah. Bustling rush hour traffic. Friendly welcoming locals. Wandering herds of giraffes. Exciting vibrant cuisine. Romantic swollen sunsets. This is Nairobi.

Most tourists will use Kenya’s capital city as the gateway for safaris. A typical multiday plan will include time at some of the best national reserves in Kenya.

At the top of any list is the Maa-sai Mara National Reserve. Here you’ll see not just the “big five” – lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinoceroses – but also zebras, hyenas and prowling cheetahs. If you come during the Great Migration, you may be able to see some of the millions of wildebeests that come here from Tanzania to cross the Mara River in droves.

To see nature’s most magnificent animals with your own eyes as they take part in the circle of life. To feel the hot African sun on your back and the wind in your hair. To smell the grit of the dust in your nostrils …. It’s the experience of a lifetime.

When your safari is done, it’s time to explore the city. Take the Guided Nairobi City Tour to see the city from the 28-story KICC tower, shop at local craft markets and visit the huge Mathare slum. The money you pay will help Mathare street children.

End your trip on a high note with a meal at the famous Carnivore restaurant. Here you can enjoy a buffet of meat skewered on Maasai swords and grilled over coals. Game meats were banned in 2004, but you can still eat ostrich, crocodile and camel. Feast until you drop! (T)
