Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City is one of the country’s most well-developed cities, and has many attractions that seem to cater exactly for families. From spiritual attractions to theme parks, there’s something here for you. One popular destination for local tourists is the city’s Dashu District.

The most famous attraction is probably the Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Taiwan’s largest Buddhist monastery. Fo Guang Shan is a religious movement that was founded 1967 and has chapters around the world. It runs many social and medical programs, including a free clinic serving remote villages and wildlife conservation areas.

Fo Guang Shan Museum is connected to the monastery and is a vast area providing a great experience and a lot of great photos. Its Jade Buddha Shrine holds tooth relics of the Buddha. A wide central path is flanked by eight pagodas leading to a 108-meter-high seated Shakyamuni Buddha. It’s a humbling sight.

From authentic Buddhist culture, it’s a short drive to the E-DA Theme Park and its cheesy fake Greek mythology. Even if you don’t buy its Asia-meets-ancient-Greece vibe, there’s plenty here in Taiwan’s largest theme park to keep you entertained, from hardcore roller coasters to water attractions to weird parades and literally floors and floors of rides for younger kids. If you don’t expect all the different elements to make sense in total, then you – and your young ones – will leave with a smile. (T)
