The Faroe Islands may not be the most isolated country in the world, but you’d be forgiven for thinking that after the 30 or 40 hours it takes to fly there. The islands are part of Denmark, but are actually closer to Scotland (about 200 km) and self-governing.

There’s no place quite like the Faroes. It’s a marvel of scenery that will constantly floor you, and also a destination for foodies.

From the capital Torshavn, on Streymoy Island, take a short flight to Vagar Island. As your plane draws near, you may see one of the trippiest sights ever – an optical illusion that makes the lake Sorvagsvatn seem to be suspended above the sea surrounding the island.

Also on Vagar Island is the tiny village of Gasadalur. The village is so remote that mailmen had to hike over a mountain to reach it every week. You can hike the trail if you’re up for it, and there are trails around here to explore, but if you see just one thing here, make it the stunning waterfall near the village that drops into the sea. The sight will stop you in your tracks.

Back in the capital, wander around Tinganes, the oldest part of the town, and admire houses topped with turf on their roofs. Torshavn is small for a capital, with only 20,000 people living here.

Your dinner highlight is the restaurant Koks, which in 2017 received the islands’ only Michelin star. Book early and be prepared to pay up to 44,000 for a “tasting menu.” Its highlights include 250-year-old clam, Norway lobster paired with sake, fermented lamb and thyme ice cream. Lip-smacking! (T)
