Asakusa/Kaminarimon

Zack: Well, well. Sensoji Temple. I’ve heard so much about this place from my colleagues. “If you have some free time, you really must go to Sensoji Temple.” That’s what everyone says.
Maya: And they’re right. This is a beautiful temple. And it’s the oldest one in Tokyo. Founded in the seventh century.
Zack: That paper lantern is huge. How old is it? What do those two Chinese characters mean?
Maya: They’re kanji. They say Kaminarimon, which means Thunder Gate. That’s not the gate’s official name but everyone calls it that. As for how old it is … I mean, you can imagine that a paper lantern can’t survive forever. This one was put up in 2013. It’s the fifth one to be put up since the first one in 1971.
Zack: How do they manage to stay up for so long?
Maya: The lanterns are made of hundreds of sheets of paper all wrapped around a bamboo frame. The lantern-making company replaces it every 10 years or so. It’s a bit like the gate itself. It was first built in the year 941, but it burned down in a fire in 1865. Then it was rebuilt, just like the lantern. In Tokyo, we’re always building and rebuilding.
Zack: “Building and rebuilding.” I like that. You should adopt that as your motto.
Maya: Well, it’s certainly a good motto for Asakusa. Come on, there’s a lot more to see here. I’m dying to show you the main temple.
Zack: Lead on!
