Greece plans hourly caps on visitors to ancient Acropolis, allowing just 20,000 daily

People going to the Acropolis of Athens will have to plan their visits carefully in future. Beginning in September, the Greek government will cap visitors at a maximum of 20,000 each day, it said on Aug. 2.

The Acropolis is Greece’s most popular archaeological site. As many as 23,000 people a day have been squeezing into the monument complex.

“That’s a huge number,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. He added that the government wants to work out how to stop excessive tourism from harming the monument.

Starting on Sept. 4, visitors will be capped at 20,000 per day. However, visitors can still stay as long as they like. The new system will also try to reduce the high number of people visiting before noon.

Over 3 million visited the site last year, according to Greece’s statistical authority. (AP)
