Kandersteg (Switzerland)

One of Switzerland’s most out-of-the-way tourist destinations is Kander-steg, a small town noted for its gor-geous mountain scenery. It has a host of outdoor activities for everyone from the most experienced mountain climber to families traveling with young children.

One of the most exhilarating things to do is the climb up the Allmenalp. This “via ferrata,” or “iron path,” may be a little easier than mountain climbing, with iron rods for your feet to stand on, but it’s still extremely challenging. However, nothing beats the thrill of walking across a bridge of three cables with nothing but a safety rope between you and the rocks far below. Do this and everything else in life will seem simple.

Or you could just take the cable car to the top. Fuel up on some Swiss cheese straight from the cheesery and have a light lunch at the restaurant before a long walk on a scenic hiking trail. There are countless trails snaking around the village. Make sure to choose one with a view of the beautiful turquoise waters of Oeschinen Lake. Mind the mountain goats!

After your hike, you can relax back at the village ― but not for long. The kids will be begging you to take them mountain tubing. If you think that means sliding down a mountain slope at up to 90 kph on an inflatable tube in the heat of summer, then you’re right. The hill is the same one ski jumpers sped down at January’s Swiss Nordic Combined Championship.

Finally, spend the night at the Landgasthof Ruedihus. Built in 1753, this luxury hotel offers sumptuous country-style dishes and a relaxing spa experience. (T)
