In Mexico, you can apply for a passport without checking a box for ‘male’ or ‘female’

Mexicans applying for a passport can now avoid checking the box for “male” or “female.” The change in policy was announced by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard on May 17 at an event in the capital, Mexico City.
Ebrard said the new policy was a historic step forward for those who identify as nonbinary.
Passport applicants can check “X” in the box for sex and “omit the need to specify gender,” the ministry said in a statement.
However, some nonbinary activists said the policy confused gender with sex. Nonbinary people do not identify with the genders “man” or “woman.”
Mexican passports did not previously ask applicants to choose their gender, only their sex: “male” or “female.”
It would be better to give the option of choosing “NB” on a gender question, said Mexican nonbinary activist Alex Orue of the nonprofit It Gets Better. (Reuters)
