Donald Trump is back.
Voters returned the Republican to the White House on Nov. 5, multiple U.S. media projections showed, as Americans chose the former president over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in a fiercely fought race that looks set to usher in another era of uncertainty.
Trump, 78, surpassed the needed 270 votes in the Electoral College, securing 312 electoral votes to Harris’s 226. He also won the popular vote with over 74 million votes, besting Harris’s tally of over 71 million, though the final tally will change after all states report their final figures.
Speaking to supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Nov. 6, Trump thanked his backers “for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president.”
“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” he said to rapturous cheers.
“This was the greatest political movement of all time. … Every citizen, I will fight for you and your families,” he added.
The victory came after a tumultuous campaign that saw the Democratic candidate change from Biden to Harris, and with polls showing a dead heat leading up to Election Day. Trump also survived two assassination attempts that reinvigorated his base. (The Japan Times)
